Vintage Ribbon Belts
You're familiar with ribbon belts-- you know, the grosgrain stripe with a metal double ring clasp--a preppy classic. Sometimes they have little whales or lobsters marching across the ribbon...and I love seeing those at the beach or golf course. However there is another type of ribbon belt, perhaps smarter, definitely eclectic, and absolutely beautiful. The ribbon on these belts are made with a strong cotton woven fabric (picture linen or soft canvas in texture and strength), then gloriously decorated in floral or geometric designs. Intricate design, color and texture define these ribbons. These are the ribbons that make the belts of Lulu Bel's Fancy. I search through Belgium, Germany and occasionally France (stumbling with translations) to find unique, vintage ribbons. My search also takes me through the southern U.S. where textile mills once wove colorful miles of extravagantly designed trims. Every once in a while I happen upon a second-hand store selling yards of trim still sealed in factory plastic. Once you see the quality and workmanship of these ribbons, its hard to go back to grosgrain lobsters. |
